Institutional Review Board (IRB)
In 1999, SHIELDS for Families developed the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to monitor and oversee the research activities associated with our then-funded, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), Children of Substance Abusing Parents Study. The creation of the SHIELDS Institutional Review Board has allowed us to become more proactive in reviewing, approving, and monitoring potential research studies targeting youth and/or adult residents of South Central Los Angeles.
Because the majority of community organizations in the ethnic communities of Los Angeles do not have easy access to universities and major medical facilities, nor easy access to their Institutional Review Board process, the SHIELDS’ IRB also serves as a mechanism for reviewing and monitoring community agency-driven research in communities of color.
